INCURABLY
ROMANTIC, the
title song of her CD, released in 2001, is an accurate description
of Toni Tennille.
The 1975 Grammy
Award winners for "Love Will Keep Us Together", Toni and
her husband, Daryl The Captain Dragon, celebrated
their 25th wedding anniversary in November 2000. "Captain
& Tennille" recorded 9 albums with 14 hits on the pop
charts including "Muskrat Love", "Shop Around",
"Lonely Night-Angel Face", and two, million-selling songs
that Toni wrote about Daryl, "Do That To Me One More Time",
and "The Way I Want To Touch You".
TELEVISION
Known for her rich voice, sensual melodies, powerful
stage presence and accessible personality, Tennilles career
is as versatile as it is successful. She co-starred with Daryl on
the ABC television series"The Captain & Tennille Variety
Show", and hosted the syndicated "Toni Tennille
Variety Talk Show".
JAZZ
& STANDARDS
Since
1984 Tennille has had an additional successful career singing classic
jazz standards and performing with top symphony
orchestras. Her previous five albums of standards, "More
Than You Know", "All
of Me", "Never Let Me Go", "Moonglow",
and "Tennille Sings
Big Band" solidified her share of the marketplace, prompting
reviewers to rave about her powerful voice and dramatic interpretation
of lyrics.
SYMPHONIES
Her
most recent symphony program, "An Evening of Great Love
Songs", is based on the songs of great American composers
such as George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen,
Johnny Mercer, Sammy Cahn and more. Audiences are flocking to her
SRO performances across the country,
with one critics bulls-eye remark, "Tennille's
voice is spicy, soothing and intoxicating... like hot apple cider
and rum.
THEATRE
In 1998 & 1999 Toni starred in the First National Tour of the
Broadway musical VICTOR/VICTORIA.
In the lead role of Victoria Grant, reviewers said of her performance,
Contralto Toni Tennille makes
Victor/Victoria her own.... Tennille glitters,
whether shes in a tux or in sequins.... Toni Tennille
is a strong lead with a smoldering, velvety voice.
MUSIC - Has Kept Them Together
!
It
was in the summer of 1971, while performing in a musical she wrote,
"Mother Earth", in San Francisco, that Toni met
husband-to-be Daryl Dragon, who auditioned for her as a keyboardist.
One look, a quick listen and she hired him on the spot. Dragon reciprocated
by hiring Toni to play keyboards for the next Beach Boys
tour. She was, and has remained, the one and only BEACH GIRL.
Music lovers also recognize Tonis voice on Pink Floyds,
The Wall and Elton Johns, Dont
Let the Sun Go Down on Me.
Family
History
Tennille was raised in Montgomery, Alabama as part of a talented
family of entertainers. Her father, Frank, was a big band singer
with Bob Crosby and the Bobcats and her mother, Cathryn,
was a television pioneer, hosting Montgomerys first daytime
television talk show. Tonis musical sisters, Jane, Louisa
and Melissa, all sang on her variety shows as well as on the Captain
& Tennille albums. Toni began her career studying classical
piano and singing with Auburn Universitys big band, the Auburn
Knights.
Toni and Daryl lived in a picture-postcard home in the foothills
of the Sierra Nevada Mountains near Lake Tahoe since the early eighties,
and have just recently relocated in a pcture-postcard setting in
the foothills of Prescott, AZ. . (The reason; they got tired of
moving large amounts of snow in the winter in N. Nev. They happily
discovered that N. Arizona usually has 'traces' of snow, rather
than 'feet').
Whether
appearing with her husband as Captain & Tennille, starring in
a major Broadway play, singing with a '40's style big band, or performing
with some of the finest symphony orchestras in North America, her
undisputed versatility confirms TONI TENNILLE as the "complete
singer/entertainer."
